About the Duo
Two musicians, two cities, one sound — from indie-folk to electro-funk.
The Story
Two Cities, One Sound
Strangers You Know is the collaboration between a Santa Barbara native and an LA native. Drawing on their contrasting coastal and city roots, the duo crafts a sound that moves fluidly between indie-folk warmth and electro-funk energy.
Their music blends organic instrumentation with electronic textures, creating songs that feel equally at home in an intimate listening room or a festival main stage.
The journey of Strangers You Know began in the most unexpected way, with two musicians from different worlds finding common ground through their shared love of genre-blending sound. One grew up with the laid-back coastal rhythms of Santa Barbara, while the other absorbed the pulse and energy of Los Angeles street culture. What started as casual conversations about music quickly evolved into late-night writing sessions, trading vocal harmonies and production ideas across the distance between their two cities. Their chemistry was immediate and undeniable, proving that sometimes the best creative partnerships are born not from proximity, but from the willingness to bridge two distinct musical landscapes into something entirely new.
At the heart of their sound lies a fearless approach to genre fusion that refuses to be pinned down by expectations. Their indie-folk foundations provide warmth and intimacy through acoustic instrumentation and layered vocal harmonies, while electro-funk elements inject rhythm, texture, and danceable energy into every track. This duality is not accidental but carefully crafted, allowing them to shift from stripped-back ballads to full-bodied grooves within a single set. The result is music that feels both familiar and surprising, rooted in songwriting tradition yet unafraid to experiment with synthetic textures, driving bass lines, and the kind of production polish that rewards repeated listening.
Live performances are where Strangers You Know truly come into their own, transforming studio arrangements into immersive experiences that capture the full range of their musical personality. Whether they are playing an intimate listening room where every vocal harmony rings clear or commanding a festival stage beneath the open sky, the duo brings the same intensity and spontaneity to every show. Their sets move seamlessly between moods, pulling audiences through quiet moments of reflection and into high-energy grooves that demand movement. This adaptability has made them a standout act across the Southern California circuit, earning them a reputation as a band that shows up ready to connect, no matter the setting.
The Sound
Indie-Folk Meets Electro-Funk
From the layered harmonies of their indie-folk side to the groove-driven pulse of their electro-funk tracks, Strangers You Know refuses to be pinned to a single genre. Their 2016 EP Loosen Up the Leash captures this range — songs like "Be It," "Attention," and "Other People" each pull from a different corner of their musical palette.
